very simple

In addition to yesterday’s photo of the men’s winner, I took about a gazillion shots over the 4+ hours that I watch the marathon. After whittling them down, I’ve ended up with about 60. No individual captions, since that’s just too much work :), but if you look at them in order, at the beginning you’ll see the womens’ winners, then the men, and then the pack. silly outfits and flags start about a third of the way down. I edited out most of the blurry shots except for one, because that was Peter Sagal, host of my favorite NPR radio show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. I sent him the pic over twitter last night, and he was very appreciative, so I kept it in the mix, even though the photo itself is kind of terrible (he was way to close to me and my camera didn’t have time to focus before he was gone).

Meb Keflezighi, the first American man to win the New York Marathon in 27 years, seen here approximately 250 yards from the finish. I will post more marathon photos soon (within the week), but I took a ton and I have to go through and selectively edit (to say the least).

In my neighborhood, the 69th Street block association has, hands down, the best halloween setup. The entire street shuts down, almost every building turns into a giant halloween exhibit with one house trying to outdo the next. Animatronic spiders, star wars characters actually rappelling down the sides of brownstones, haunted houses, and just tons of people. So instead of dealing with the chaos of the village halloween parade, I decided to head just a few blocks away to take some pics. First, of course, being my favorite costume of the day, and one that only makes sense in NY.

I know it’s probably better for the environment that only one incandescent lightbulb is actually working (in the middle of the day), but it just seemed so…pathetic.

I always love these shops that exist entirely in the empty space between actual buildings.

for theme day: “play”. and yes, I have a subscription.

(I originally planned something a bit more dynamic for today’s theme, particularly since I picked the theme, but it’s raining outside, putting the kibosh on most play-related outdoor activities).

I opted to do a walk around the lower east side and (what is left of) little italy today, and took a ton of pictures. unfortunately, I hated most of them when I looked at them on the computer. I think the narrow streets just didn’t give me enough room to take the pictures I really wanted to take. In addition, while the beautiful, bright sunlight we had today makes for a lovely walk, it actually causes photographs to look flat. This is why the photographic “magic hour” is actually the hour after the sun rises and before the sun sets – the long shadows created by a low-angled sun give pictures more character and depth.
