The Hartford airport has one of the simplest good ideas I’ve seen in some time for an airport.

short update

by sam on 11/30/2009

I know I’m several days behind on the 365 project, but rest assured, pictures have been taken.  The problem is that a lot of pictures have been taken, and all 300 or so that I took over my whirlwind weekend that involved thanksgiving in massachusetts and a wedding in texas have been downloaded to my computer.  I just don’t have the energy quite yet to start going through them.  Maybe tomorrow.

another year, another giant bird sacrificed to our gluttonous ways. I would have taken a pic of the thing after it was cooked, but by then I was too blotto to pick up my camera.

365:85 (current)

by sam on 11/24/2009

For 365 group theme day “current”.  These are just the chargers and wires that I need for the cornucopia of electronic devices that I can’t seem to travel without.  assembled while packing for this weekend’s ridiculous 5 day trip that will encompass both western Massachusetts for thanksgiving and Houston, Texas for a wedding.

And to think, thanks to the iphone, this is relatively tame compared to what it used to look like when I had a separate cellphone, ipod and work blackberry.

365:84 (a death in belmont)

by sam on 11/23/2009

finished another analog book today, A Death in Belmont by Sebastian Junger. It’s ultimately a pretty interesting meditation on the limits of our justice system to find out who is actually guilty of any particular crime, but the specifics are pretty amazing.  In 1963, a woman was strangled to death in Belmont.  An african-american man who had been working at her house was convicted of the crime.  Except…

Except, that down the street, at the author’s own home, some carpenters were working on the author’s mother’s new studio, and one of those workers was Albert DeSalvo, who later confessed to being the Boston Strangler.  I think the creepiest part of the whole book is the photo at the very beginning, of a baby Sebastian Junger sitting in his mother’s lap, with DeSalvo standing behind them.  DeSalvo never confessed to committing the particular crime in Belmont, but still…

Random update

by sam on 11/23/2009

I haven’t done a non-photo related post in some time, but I just finished my latest book while sitting in the cafe at barnes and noble, and was reflecting on how nutso this week is going to be.

First, the travel. As always for thanksgiving, I’m heading to the berkshires to hang with family. Except, instead of staying through Sunday as I would normally do, I’m flying to Houston on Friday, because one of my oldest friends is getting (re)married down there on saturday. And then i’m flying back to NY on Sunday. Of thanksgiving weekend. I’m thinking it’s a good thing I don’t have a job I’ll need to actually get to on Monday.

Actually, that’s about it for my nutso week, now that I think about it. Although apparently my brother is sick with something that may be the flu (swine or otherwise) and is only finally going to the doctor because my dad convinced my brother’s girlfriend to drag him there. Or an emergency room. I’ll have to call him later to check on him. I’m not going within 100 feet of him though, because I’m pretty sure that swine flu makes a pretty crappy wedding present.

I’ll return to photoblogging later with a post about the book I just finished, but I left the jacket at home so I can’t photograph it yet.

365:83 (shake shack)

by sam on 11/23/2009

I was walking past madison square earlier today, and was kind of surprised at how many people were still waiting on line and eating outside at the shake shack, given the fact that it was (a) 4:45 in the afternoon and (b) about 45 degrees outside.
